About this course
A mid-sized software company in Berlin has just signed a new customer in California, and the product team wants to move European customer records to a cloud platform hosted in the United States. The data protection officer has one afternoon to decide: is the transfer lawful, which transfer mechanism fits, what safeguards must be documented, and what happens if a customer objects or asks for their data to be deleted? No single paragraph of the GDPR answers all of that at once. The answer comes from weighing lawful bases, transfer rules, data subject rights, and controller and processor duties together, and then defending the choice in a way a regulator would accept.
That is exactly the kind of judgement the IAPP CIPP-E exam tests, and it is the kind of judgement this set of CIPP-E practice tests is built to strengthen. This test preparation resource offers 560 multiple-choice IAPP privacy practice questions with detailed explanations, organised across the six CIPP-E domains, so you can practise applying European data protection law to realistic situations rather than memorising isolated definitions.
Privacy law is tested through decisions, not definitions alone
The CIPP-E exam does not reward candidates who can only recite articles of the GDPR. It rewards candidates who can read a scenario, spot the legal issue hiding inside it, and choose the response the law actually requires. A question might describe a marketing team that collected consent through a pre-ticked box, a processor that waited a week to tell its controller about a breach, or a company that appointed a data protection officer but gave that person no independence from management.
These GDPR exam practice questions are written in that scenario style. You will identify the correct lawful basis when consent, contract, legitimate interests, and legal obligation all look plausible at first glance, decide when a data protection impact assessment is required, and work through transfers to third countries, adequacy decisions, standard contractual clauses, and derogations, while practising how to distinguish the duties of controllers from those of processors, joint controllers, and sub-processors.
what you will practise
This European data protection practice set contains 560 questions in total, spread across six sections that follow the CIPP-E exam structure. Each section targets one domain, so you can focus your study on the areas where you are weakest and track your progress section by section.
1. Exam Overview and Domain I - Introduction to European Data Protection - 89 questions
The history of European data protection, from early national laws and the 1995 Data Protection Directive to the GDPR and the ePrivacy framework, plus the institutions that shape the law: the European Commission, the European Data Protection Board, national supervisory authorities, and the Court of Justice of the European Union.
2. Domain II, part 1 - European Data Protection Law and Regulation, first half - 94 questions
The territorial and material scope of the GDPR, the definitions of personal data and special categories of data, the core principles of lawfulness, fairness, transparency, purpose limitation, data minimisation, accuracy, storage limitation, integrity, and confidentiality, and the six lawful bases for processing, including the conditions that make consent valid.
3. Domain II, part 2 - European Data Protection Law and Regulation, second half - 90 questions
Data subject rights: access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection, including the right not to be subject to solely automated decisions. This section also covers international transfers in depth: adequacy decisions, appropriate safeguards, binding corporate rules, and the derogations available when no safeguard applies.
4. Domain III - European Data Processing - 104 questions
The largest section in this set, reflecting how much of the exam turns on processing in practice. It covers the obligations of controllers and processors, contracts between them, joint controllership, records of processing, security measures, breach notification duties to supervisory authorities and to data subjects, and processing by design and by default. Questions here often present operational facts, such as a vendor onboarding or a security incident, and ask what must happen next.
5. Domain IV - European Data Protection: Scope and Accountability - 89 questions
Accountability as a working discipline: data protection impact assessments, when they are mandatory and what they must contain, prior consultation with supervisory authorities, the appointment, position, and tasks of the data protection officer, codes of conduct, certification mechanisms, and the records and policies that show a controller can demonstrate compliance when challenged.
6. Domain V - Compliance with European Data Protection Law and Regulation - 94 questions
Compliance programmes end to end: building a privacy programme, training staff, managing vendors, handling complaints and supervisory authority investigations, and understanding enforcement powers, administrative fines, compensation claims, and remedies for data subjects.
Using explanations to learn the GDPR framework
Every question in this set comes with a detailed explanation that goes beyond naming the correct option. Each explanation states the rule, shows how it applies to the facts in the question, and explains why the other options fall short, whether because they cite the wrong legal basis, misstate a deadline, confuse a controller duty with a processor duty, or apply a transfer mechanism that does not fit the facts. That approach matters for CIPP-E preparation, because two options may both sound reasonable until you notice that one depends on consent that was never freely given, or on an adequacy decision that does not cover the country in question.
The explanations also build connections across domains. A question about an access request may lead back to retention rules from Domain II and to the security measures in Domain III, while a question about a transfer may draw on the accountability records covered in Domain IV. Reading the explanations carefully, including for questions you answered correctly, is the fastest way to turn 560 practice questions into a coherent picture of the GDPR framework as a whole. Study at your own pace and in any order: work through one domain at a time, or use the full set as a timed review before your exam.
Who should practice with this set
This set is designed for privacy professionals, data protection officers, lawyers, and compliance staff preparing for the IAPP CIPP-E exam on European data protection.
